Vice President Mr. Venkaiah Naidu called for values-based education with emphasis on Indian culture and heritage.
“Education is for empowerment, enlightenment and employment, not just the acquisition of degrees and certificates,” Venkaiah Naidu told a public meeting during the celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee of Sri Patibandla Seetharamaiah High School, here on Tuesday.
Lamenting the commercialization of education, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu said education and the study of medicine were treated as noble missions in the past.
“Education must produce socially conscious and responsible citizens, who fight selflessly for the greater good of society and the country. No one will remember if you love each other. But you become immortal if you live for others. Then you live long in the memory of others,” he added.
While emphasizing the importance of holistic education, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu said equal attention should be given to physical fitness and activities such as gardening.
Reiterating the need to prioritize education in the mother tongue, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu said, “It is important to master one’s mother tongue, while learning other languages.”

“Degradation of values”
Expressing his concern over the deterioration of values in society, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu called on people to elect and support public representatives with 4 Cs – character, ability, (good) conduct and caliber. Representatives of the people must be disciplined and have a commitment to the welfare of the people.
“I wish to see India as a strong and powerful nation, where there is no hunger, no illiteracy and no discrimination,” Mr. Venkaiah Naidu said.
Former MP Y. Sivaji said Guntur district had a rich colonial heritage and missionaries had done pioneering work in establishing colleges and hospitals. “AC College is unique in its kind, offering courses in arts and sciences since the beginning of the 20 and century,” he said. Kugler Hospital is another pioneering institution that has saved many lives, he added.
Govinda Rajulu Chintala, President of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD); chairman of the school management committee, Ganta Subbarao; and Patibandla Vishnu Vardhan, Secretary and Correspondent, Sri Patibandla Seetharamaiah High School were present.
