CHEYENNE, Wyo. (KDVR) – Cheyenne Frontier Days is all about cowboy culture, but there is also another culture that is also celebrated: American Indians.
From the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming, the Little Sun Drum and Dance Group came here to dance.
“I would call it an educational cultural sharing showcasing the western theme of Cheyenne Frontier Days,†said Sandra Iron Cloud.
Composed of teachers, college, secondary and primary students. Even the little ones exhibit the different dance styles of the northern plains tribes.
“You have the traditional dance, you have the fancy dance, you have the female jingle and the female weed, you have over 500 nations in the United States,†said Iron Cloud.
Native American dance is all about telling stories, teaching younger generations and history.
“It teaches lessons about life and it’s part of expressing who we are,†said Iron Cloud.
What about the colorful clothes the dancers wear? Iron Cloud said it was by design. “We make it colorful to improve how we feel. “
Sandra Iron Cloud said learning to dance is not difficult, “It’s ingrained, it’s our DNA.” And that’s part of American history.
