SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Authorities on Thursday publicly identified five lawmen who came under fire last weekend while investigating a report of domestic violence on the Barona Indian Reservation, prompting a shooting that injured a woman.
San Diego County Sheriff’s Sgt. Michael Cruz and MPs Bryson Benavente, Tony Bernal, Nicholas McGregor and Robert Simpson hit back when 23-year-old ex-con Gianni Oliver came out of a house in the 4000 block of Capitan Grande and allegedly started shooting at them on Sunday night , department officials said.
Oliver’s girlfriend, also 23, was speaking with deputies when the shooting broke out and was injured by the suspect’s gunfire, Lt. Thomas Seiver said. She was treated in a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged.
Oliver surrendered after a brief stalemate and was taken to the county jail on suspicion of attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm and other felony charges.
Benavente has been employed by the sheriff’s department for eight years, Bernal for two years, Cruz for 14 years, McGregor for seven years and Simpson for 22 years, Seiver said.
